This is my mom's favorite movie and she always says how accurate it is to her experience, so I decided it was time I watch it! In my opinion, it is so much more than just a movie, it's a kick to the chest, and it's so eye-opening to finally watch a movie diving into these topics. although this movie is a bit slow and can feel like it's dragging at times, each minute is worth your time. At first glance you might think "chick flick" but in reality, it is a drama and very impactful tear-jerking drama at that. If you want an emotional, mother-daughter dynamic movie, then this is perfect. I think anyone of any background can appreciate…

Mother and daughter relationships always fascinate me because no matter what you tell yourself, some part of you is always craving that approval from your mother. No matter what you think, some part of you is always either trying to emulate or abandon her way of living.
Every mother passes down part of herself to her daughter. Generations and generations of women are living and dying for their children. To give them a better life. To help them realize that they deserve to be seen. To help them realize their own value as a human being. And we aren’t perfect so we get it wrong sometimes and we hurt each other but that connection is always there.
And in this…

some of the directing choices here feel a little dated & overly sentimental — kind of like a hallmark movie, almost? but it’s an ASIAN-AMERICAN hallmark movie, and the book it’s based on is lovely, and i watched it with my mom and it made both of us cry a LOT so i’m willing to overlook any and all cheesiness. i am also willing to watch anything with ming-na wen because i think she’s neat.

Whether you grew up in China or in the United States, if you don't know your self-worth as a woman, you're going to find yourself in terrible situations. In The Joy Luck Club, some of those scenes were the most heartbreaking.
Despite the heart-wrenching scenarios some of these women found themselves in, the film as a whole was beautifully-told and incredibly touching. I loved this window into Chinese and Chinese-American cultures, respectively, the latter of which has barely received much focus in American cinema. More than anything, though, I loved the centrality of women to the plot of the film. The men were merely a footnote.

The space where a relationship with my mother should be is a hollow, cavernous space in my heart. A blackhole that disintegrates any glimmer of improvement before it has even a second to settle. I want to know my mother and I want my mother to know me but the space between us has grown the width of three oceans over. I am missing a piece of me I don’t know how to miss because I don’t think it was ever really there to begin with.
The Joy Luck Club wrecked me far more than I could have anticipated. A sprawling, interwoven tale detailing the generational trauma and relational repairs of four sets of mothers and daughters. Told with an…

wayne wang how do you do it my guy
y'all are so sick for the way you talk about this movie like it's a chick flick. it's not perfect, but i feel like people are a lot more forgiving when they watch stories about white men and their tragedies, whereas movies like the joy luck club are held to the highest possible standard. any corny or dated moment is harped on to a degree that flaws in other movies wouldn't be
well, that couldn't be me lads. i cried 8 seperate times, harder each time. put some respect on wayne wang's name. also, i've never seen ming-na wen so young before and i'm now mourning the time before her disneyfication when she was allowed to have feelings 😭 she's so cute
