Spring is in the air here in Michigan! And although I admit I keep waiting for winter to come roaring back, I am enjoying these sunny 60-degree days. The birds are chirping, days are getting longer, and it’s the perfect time to bring some of that spring energy indoors with asimplespring bulb flower arrangement.

Let’s begin with choosing a container:

I am using a woven basket I found at HomeGoods a few years ago. Woven baskets are a fantastic choice for a spring bulb flower arrangement. They’re natural and airy and add a touch of rustic charm. This one and this one are similar to mine. Mine is 16 inches in diameter and 8.5 inches high. This type of floral arrangement would also be beautiful in a porcelain bowl, a metal basket like this, or even a vintage crock. The good news is you probably have something around the house that would work!

Assembling Your Simple Spring Bulb Flower Arrangement:

My potted bulbs are from Trader Joe’s. I have also found a great selection of spring-blooming bulbs at Walmart. I am using a 6-inch pot of orange variegated tulips, a 4-inch pot of Grape Hyacinths, and a 4-inch pot of yellow daffodils.

There are so many various bulbs to choose from and they would all be beautiful in a living flower arrangement.

You have two options once you choose the bulbs you want to use.

Option One: Add soil to your container and directly plant/arrange the bulbs into it, gently pulling them from the pots and separating them. Make sure you add enough soil to your container and firmly pack it around the bulbs to ensure they have enough support. If you are using a woven basket, you will want to line the bottom of the basket with plastic before you begin so that your arrangement doesn’t leak.

Option Two: I am using this option today. I am leaving the bulbs in their original nursery pots. I have lined the woven basket with a brown paper bag and some tissue paper to support the pots. Both ways work equally well. I chose this way because I liked how the plants looked when I placed them into the basket, so there was no reason to pull them out of their pots.

Here are a few tips:

  • Nestle the potted bulbs together in your woven basket, playing with the arrangement until you like the composition.
  • Taller bulbs like tulips can be placed towards the back, with shorter daffodils or hyacinths in the front.

Finishing Touches:

For some extra height, I am adding puss* willow branches. Nothing says spring like a few branches of puss* willow. I foraged these from my neighbor’s yard (with permission), but you can find these at Trader Joe’s (or any local florist). Next, I am going to add sheet moss to hide the plastic pots or cover the soil if you planted your bulbs. Preserved moss adds a natural, textural element to your flower arrangements. It’s also a wonderful way to add some additional pops of color. Here, I used four kinds of green moss and some Lichen.

Caring for your Floral Arrangement:

Your simple spring bulb flower arrangement requires minimal care to thrive indoors.

  • Place your basket in a bright location with indirect sunlight.
  • Water the arrangement regularly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Avoid overwatering, which can cause the bulbs to rot.

With a bit of planning, a trip to your local garden center, and a few simple steps, you can create a beautiful spring bulb flower arrangement that will brighten your home for weeks to come. So, get creative, embrace the colors of spring, and enjoy the satisfaction of nurturing your own little piece of spring indoors!
