As soon as we saw Galaxy's Edge Chocolate Popcorn with Crait Salt, we had to make a copycat recipe. Served at Kat Saka's Kettle in Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge, this popcorn is tastes similar to Cocoa Krispies cereal. With the addition of salt, it makes a satisfying salty and sweet treat!

If the word "Crait" sounds familiar, the planet of Crait is featured in the The Last Jedi. As Finn and Rose glide over the white salt in their speeders, an exquisite, bright red salt is kicked up from below! We never imagined what Crait salt would taste like until we heard Kat Saka was using it for her latest popcorn creation.

As it turns out, it's easy to make red salt by adding food coloring to fine sea salt. To get a nice coating of red salt on the popcorn, you have to use a lot of it, making for a very salty bite! However, when the salt-covered popcorn is mixed with the unsalted ones, it’s a delicious sweet and salty bite.

For the chocolate popcorn glaze, we used a product called Glaze Pop made by Gold Medal. We don’t know if Kat Saka’s Kettle is using this product, but Chocolate are among the available flavors, so we gave it a whirl! This is also the same popcorn glaze we use in our Kat Saka's Outpost Popcorn Mix copycat recipe, which features both Grape and Red Hot Cinnamon glazes.

Another unique aspect of Kat Saka’s Kettle‘s popcorn is the kernel shape. When popped, the popcorn looks like little balls, or "mushrooms" instead of the standard butterfly shape. This proved impossible to track down in our local grocery stores, so we found the perfect mushroom popcorn on Amazon from Amish Country Popcorn.

To make our Galaxy's Edge inspired chocolate popcorn recipe, we used a Whirley-Pop stovetop popcorn popper. This pot, complete with a stirring handle, claims to make perfect popcorn on your stovetop in just 3 minutes. This did, indeed, make the perfect popcorn quickly every time!

Instructions

  • Make the red salt. Put the salt in a plastic sandwich bag. Add a drop of red food coloring and close the bag. Shake and smash the bag to incorporate the food coloring into the salt. Add more food coloring (if needed), little by little, until you reach the desired red color.

  • Make the chocolate popcorn! Add the coconut oil to the Whirley-Pop stovetop popcorn maker and heat on medium heat (do not preheat the burner before adding the coconut oil).

  • Immediately after the coconut oil has melted, add 1/4 cup popcorn kernels to the Whirley-Pop and sprinkle the Chocolate Glaze Pop on top of the popcorn kernels.

  • Close the Whirley-Pop lid and turn the crank constantly until the sound of popping popcorn slows*, then remove from the heat.

*Note: We noticed, from start to finish, it takes about 3 minutes for the popcorn to pop. After a couple minutes of stirring, the popping starts slow. Then, there’s a lot of popping similar in sound to the grand finale of a Disney fireworks show! We removed ours from the heat immediately after this “grand finale,” then continued to turn the Whirley-Pop for another 10 seconds to prevent from burning.

  • Give the Whirley-Pop a little shake (left and right, not up and down) to loosen up the popcorn from sticking together, then dump the popcorn out of the Whirley-Pop into a large bowl.

  • Immediately (while the chocolate glaze is still warm), transfer 2 cups of popcorn to another bowl and add just enough red salt to coat the popcorn. Stir to encourage the red salt to stick to the popcorn.

  • Transfer the red-salt-covered popcorn back to the large bowl of unsalted, chocolate popcorn and stir. Enjoy!
